Unfinished: The Sculpture of Hugh Hayden

Unfinished: The Sculpture of Hugh Hayden

New York-based sculptor Hugh Hayden is extremely careful not to remove the “branches” on his raw material – an act that results in an explosion of form and interpretations. His debut New York solo show is on view at White Columns this month and requires a close look… carefully.

Brier Patch, 2018 (detail)

Hugh Hayden was one of the break-out stars of the Frieze Art Fair early this month, where White Columns presented his picnic table sculpture created out of fallen Manhattan trees. And now through June 2nd, just a block south of the Whitney Museum, you can see two newer works that benefit from the larger space and fewer crowds.

Brier Patch, 2018

“Brier Patch” is composed of 6 school desks that appear inseparably interwoven by their own outgrowths. Hugh notes his intention to create “visible, unifying space that is at once protective and impenetrable”. His work is absolutely a mix of oppositions: drawing you near while blocking you out, recalling the joy of youth and fear of the present/future, nature vs man, life vs death – all open to diverse personal interpretations.

Hayden scavenges his materials –  a search that can’t be easy in New York City. An he’s not gluing his favorite branches to a finished chair, he needs to find wood that can serve both the carving and the aura. It’s one of the most unique collaborations for a sculptor and a fallen tree.

Hangers, 2018

The second work “Hangers” is a carving of a human skeleton, slightly larger than life, that hangs from a clothing rack on wheels. There is again an intriguing opposition: the “death” that hides within the thicket of branches, and the physical manifestation of life that radiates outward like electrical sparks.

Don’t miss this chance to see Hugh’s work in person, and we strongly recommend bringing a friend – everyone who steps in the room will see it differently and love it equally.

27 Powerful Portraits Of London’s Identical Twins By Peter Zelewski

Photographer Peter Zelewski has spent the last couple of years exploring the special world of identical twins, questioning not only the incredible bond between them, but also what makes them different from each other as their unique personalities shine through.

Peter has a passion for street portraiture, and chooses to capture his subjects outdoors in natural light. He captures identical twins from different ages, backgrounds and gender, all found in the diverse and cosmopolitan city of London, where Detroit-born Peter has lived since the 1980’s.

“When I first started the project, it was without a doubt the visual attraction which I found most interesting when taking portraits of twins,” Peter told Huck. “But, as the series progressed, it was the subtle differences that became equally interesting.”

While the twins are deliberately dressed similarly, even affecting similar poses to highlight their togetherness, Peter manages to capture their individuality too, in the subtle differences in expression and mood that they display. “One example is 15-year-old brothers Duke and Joe. Although they are identical twins they couldn’t be more different, both in their physical appearance and personalities. By stripping down the background and photographing the boys in plain t-shirts, I was able to let their different personalities shine through.”

To capture so much in one frame, on top of the stunning aesthetic quality of the photos themselves, is an impressive feat indeed. Peter is exhibiting some of his portraits in an exhibition at the Hoxton Hotel Gallery in Shoreditch, London. For more info, visit thehoxton.com.

German Artist Creates Miniature Scenes With A Darkly Satirical Twist

Frank Kunert, 54, is an incredible artist from Frankfurt, Germany. After graduating from high school, he became a photographer’s apprentice and later – a freelance photographer. Over the past few years, he has been working on a photography series with a twist called “Small Worlds.”

“Small Worlds” is a series of images of carefully crafted 3D models, created by the artist himself. Kunert spends weeks, sometimes even months, perfecting the miniature scenes. At first glance, the scenes might look straightforward and simple, but once you focus on the details, a totally different, slightly dark, satirical idea of modern society and people breaks through. It’s not just a simple crib, it’s also an office desk, the TV is connected to the toilet and the playground slide leads into a highway.

Take a look at some of the images by Frank Kunert that prove nothing is as simple as it seems.

Clock Clock 24 is a statement-making object that re-contextualizes time through an ingenious marriage of analog and digital. Twenty-four round clocks come together to create one giant digital display. The clock hands are choreographed, liberating the clocks from the sole purpose of telling time. Can be set for 12 or 24 hour time in three different modes: minimal, medium or elaborate movement between minutes.
